The Star Online | Film to fame

Sunday June 19, 2011

Do you have random ideas and the burning passion to get them out to an audience? Think you can create a short film with a storyline involving a fishing pole, a policeman, and the line, “Who’s your macha”?

If your answer is yes, it is time to gather a few friends and sign up for the Triple Movie Challenge, organised by the Multimedia Society (MMS) of HELP University College.

Held for the first time this year, the competition – inspired by the BMW Shorties – is open to all students over 18 and are studying at a college or university in the Klang Valley.

At the launch of the competition, MMS president and Bachelor of Mass Communication student William Beale said the competition aimed to provide more practical avenues for students interested in the film industry.

“We study the theories in class, so we hope to let students have an avenue to create something from what they learn, and hopefully get their work out to the public,” he said.

He added that the competition would also serve as an eye opener as the participants would experience the challenges that professional filmmakers go through.

MMS advisor and lecturer at the institution Deepak Menon said, “Through activities like this, the students’ work are showcased to practitioners and specialists in the field, which is a very healthy and good exercise for them.”

The judges for the competition will include documentary film maker Zan Azlee, Kelab Seni Filem Malaysia president Wong Tuck Cheong, and model, actress, TV host and producer Jojo Struys.

The competition will run from June 22 to July 22, and the winning entries will be screened at the HELP film festival in September.
